Mr. Lamar W. Powell
Presenting…
Chief Warrant Officer 3 (CW3) (Ret.) Lamar Webster Powell
Lamar Webster Powell was a visionary who believed in the value and power of a quality education. He was born in Liberty, Mississippi, on January 4, 1918, to Joe and Bernice Powell.
At an early age, Lamar had an eagerness to excel. He was an exceptional student. Lamar was disciplined in his studies, and he strived for success at home, on the farm, and in school.
At age 18, Lamar left home to begin his long career with the United States Armed Forces where he served for 23 years. Lamar took pride in serving his country. During the time in which he served, it was difficult for an African American soldier to receive recognition or honors. Even though the odds were stacked against him, Lamar received the Korean Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, United Nations Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal.
While in the military, Lamar took business courses at the University of Chicago which sparked his interest to dabble in the stock market. This dabbling led to extreme, consistent investments in the market. Lamar was an avid investor and saver. His investments, coupled with his personal savings from his income, slowly accumulated into financial freedom. Growing up during the Depression influenced his strict way of life. He valued his resources and only purchased what was needed for survival. He attributed his financial success to patience and saving.
Lamar had a spirit of philanthropy. He donated money to totally build the JROTC building at Amite County High School in Amite County, Mississippi, which is named in his honor. He was a passionate believer in giving back as well as an advocate for higher education. This is evident in the endowments he has established at South Carolina State University, Jackson State University, Tougaloo College, and The University of Southern Mississippi.
Lamar inspired many through telling his life story. His hearty laugh would fill the air as he would reminisce about those times. Lamar is remembered and cherished for the impression he made on those who met him. Leaving a legacy was imperative to Lamar. He believed in getting an education, striving for the top, saving all you can save, and giving back when you can.
The Lamar W. Powell Family Scholarship is just one of the many ways his legacy will live on and continue to make a positive impact on generations to come.
